she says it best....

week one

was using my non dominant hand...

(left in my case)

i was concentrating a lot on the formation of my letters

focusing on each letter's creative shape as it evolved

while i wrote in my journal...
taking several rests in between my words

necessary as my hand felt fatigued by the effort

i was asking it to make

shaky and unsure looking...

 i am following through with 

using my left hand 

to turn off lights, 

moving my computer mouse, 

hand washing dishes,

turning pages of a book, 

brushing my teeth..

 this mindful exercise  

gave me cause to pause, 

to concentrate more on the tasks i am doing...

to not take for granted my efforts
and
to realize my left hand will need help
from time to time
and that is okay.

week two
about leaving no trace...
picking a space and making sure
no one knows you were there...
involves attention to detail...to say the least
this will, at times, i am sure, 

feel overwhelming
but the idea 
of leaving something nice 
for someone, anyone
is making me
careful,
considerate 
and just a prideful
for leaving a space 
nice...for someone...anyone...
creates a good feeling inside
and who does not like good feelings..

i am looking forward

to this year of mindfulness

and all that i may journey towards

21... TIPS 
TO RELEASE SELF-NEGLECT 
AND 
LOVE YOURSELF IN ACTION

1.  Begin your day with  love (not technology). 

Remind yourself of your  worthiness before  getting out of bed. Breathe in love and breathe out  love. Enfold  yourself in light. Saturate your being in love.

2.  Take time to mediate and journal. 

Spend time focusing inward  daily.  Begin with 5 minutes of meditation and 5 minutes of journaling  each  morning. Gradually increase this time.

3. Talk yourself  happy. 

Use affirmations to train your mind to  become more positive. Put a  wrist band on your right wrist. When you’re  participating in self-abuse  of any form, move the band to your left  wrist.

4. Get  emotionally honest. 

Let of go of numbing your feelings.  Shopping,  eating, and drinking are examples of avoiding discomfort,  sadness, and  pain. Mindfully breathe your way through your feelings and  emotions.

5.  Expand your interests. 

Try something new. Learn a language. Go  places  you’ve never been. Do things you haven’t done before. You have a  right  to an awesome life.

6. Enjoy life enhancing activities. 

Find exercise you like. Discover  healthy foods that are good for you.  Turn off technology for a day and  spend time doing things that make you  feel alive.

7. Become willing to surrender. 

Breathe,  relax, and let go. You can  never see the whole picture. You don’t know  what anything is for. Stop  fighting against yourself by thinking and  desiring people and events in  your life should be different. Your plan  may be different from your  soul’s intentions.

8. Work on  personal and spiritual development. 

Be willing to  surrender and grow.  Life is a journey. We are here to learn and love on  a deeper level. Take  penguin steps and life becomes difficult. One  step at a time is enough  to proceed forward.

9. Own your potential. 

Love yourself  enough to believe in the  limitless opportunities available to you. Take  action and create a  beautiful life for yourself.

10. Be  patient with yourself. 

Let go of urgency and fear. Relax and  transform  striving into thriving. Trust in yourself, do good work, and  the  Universe will reward you.

11. Live in appreciation. 

Train  your mind to be grateful. Appreciate  your talents, beauty, and  brilliance. Love your imperfectly perfect  self.

12. Be  guided by your intuition. 

All answers come from within. Look  for signs  and pay attention to your gut feelings. You’ll hear two inner  voices  when you need to make a decision. The quiet voice is your  higher self;  the loud voice is your ego. Always go with the quieter  voice.

13.  Do what honors and respects you. 

Don’t participate in activities  that  bring you down. Don’t allow toxic people in your life. Love  everyone,  but be discerning on who you allow into your life.

14.  Accept uncertainty. 

Suffering comes from living in the pain of  the past  or the fear of the future. Put your attention on the present  moment and  be at peace.

15. Forgive yourself. 

Learn from your  mistakes and go forward. Use  this affirmation, “I forgive myself for  judging myself for __________  (fill in the blank i.e.: for getting sick,  for acting out, for not  doing your best.)

16. Discover  the power of fun. Self-love requires time to relax,  play, and create  face-to-face interaction with others. Our fast-paced  world creates a  goal setting, competitive craziness that doesn’t leave  room for play.  Dr. Stuart Brow says, “The opposite of play isn’t work,  it is  depression.”

17. Be real. 

Speak up and speak out. Allow yourself to be seen, known, and heard. Get comfortable with intimacy (in-to-me-see).

18. Focus on the positive. 

Go to your heart and dwell on and praise yourself for what you get right in all areas.

19.  Become aware of self neglect and rejection. 

Become conscious of  your  choices. Ask yourself several times throughout the day, “Does this   choice honor me?”

20. Imagine what your life would look  like 

if you believed in your  worth. 

Dedicate your life to loving you.  Make it your main event.

21. Seek professional help. 

Self-rejection and neglect is painful.  You deserve to be happy. You have  a right to be accepted and loved. If  necessary, seek help from a  support group, counselor, or coach. It’s  the best investment you can  make.

Back in April...

I received an invitation.

It was from Pinterest.

What is Pinterest I asked?
Who for goodness sake is Pinterest
and where praytell is Pinterest?

I was brave.

I opened my mail, e-mail style

and.....

I was directed towards an amazing site

where gathering and viewing imagery
is such a delight.

I have been pinning now for four months

and its sooooo, sooooo fun!!!!

Its like having an online scrapbook where you can

not only gather beautiful visuals

but how to tutorials for making really cool art

with children

as well as inspirational words for any given day!

I am a teacher of little people

and its so wonderful to have

to refer to, be inspired by, and just enjoy.

Chalk Board ART

i know white boards are probably better

and maybe it is because there is less dust from the chalk

but there is something so very special, so very wonderful

about a chalk board and the way chalk takes to it.

a white board cannot compare,

to the softness of each color whether it be white

or some other colorful hue,

and even though they may not be so visable

in the classroom anymore,

here in my cottage i am finding spaces

for them, so little hearts and hands,

and big ones too, may at any given moment,

share a thought, a word, a wish,

and by doing so, bring some cheer!

Once Upon a Time...

a man built a house.
It was a magnificent house
and it was on the edges of a great sea.
It was built during a time when the details of a house
were as important as the details of one's family.
I visited this house today and while wandering about

I imaged such a life where detail of grace and elagance was all the rule
of beautiful vintage treasures

now more than century old.

the gates to this magnificent mansion

a shady path in the neighborhood

fascade facing courtyard gardens

shiny, ornate door knobs

sparkling shiny glass chandelier

the contemplative

wonderous ballroom echoing a song from yesteryear

vintage lace designs

hand painted harpscord

ribbions and lace put together so very lovingly

a ceiling relief...oh the stories you could share...if you dare

vaulted gilded ceiling

sweet and darling bird house

a door to close...to keep such a treasury...safe and sound

a trellis of flowers to remember

the East Coast Train to board...

petals i leave for you dear and glorious maverick

as i wave good-bye to your beloved Whitehall...

i saw some trees....they seemed to be listening to me....

some trees had vines...

some trees were behind gates...

but when i came to the "Tower of Ivy"...

ah...i knew...

a flower press was the center of attention
friday, in a classroom of intercity children
and after gathering, at recess, stems and leaves and flower petals
we placed them, together, into the press.

this thursday we peek at our preserved treasures
and maybe.. just maybe we might make something
ARTful...those gifted 5th graders
and me.

There is something divine

about sending art into the unknown

with nothing more than love attached to it.

Considering another project

to include intercity school children at the elementary level

who many times do not know what to do with their hands.

I have started to tell them to fold them.

I too am folding mine in hopes

this can be a really, really special project

recently i was teaching...

a little boy was having a difficult moment

dealing with anger.

anger is a hard thing to process.

it brought tears to my eyes

seeing him struggle.

i took this little boy by the hand.

come with me i said.

we went for a walk

this little boy and i.

inside my purse was a package of unopened cookies.

have you ever had a shortbread cookie

i asked this little second grader.

no. he said quietly.

i opened up the package.
we sat, he and i on a picnic bench.

try this. i said handing him a cookie.

i watched as he took a bite.

his face softened.

he took another bite.

do you like it? i asked.

yes, he said with a nod.

see...you want to be soft and sweet

like shortbread i said.

not hard and stale.

he finished both cookies

this little person.

he said they were the best cookie he ever had.

then i took his hand.

we walked back to class.

i called his name

and he looked up at me

with his big brown eyes

remember i said...

soft....and sweet..like shortbread.
he nodded his head.

the month of April

celebrates poetry...

Lilias Trotter

was both poet and painter

highly regarded by John Ruskin.

Upon hearing another calling

Lilias brought her spiritual vision

to the cloistered world of Arab womanhood

to the children in the streets of Casbah in Algiers

and to Sufi mystics in the desert Southlands."

"The greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world

is to see something and tell what it saw in a plain way."

Lilias filled her small leather bound diaries

with watercolors of all that she saw.

Toward the end of John Ruskin's life

she sent, to him, a hymnal.

"It has been full of light and blessedness to me"

she wrote.

To John Ruskin

St. Lilias, as he referred to her,

followed her "own path happily"

and basked in the "the light I cannot find."

As Easter nears...

I think of Lilias, of John Ruskins,

and this need to record what you see

here in this blessed place...on the other side of Heaven.
