i have been helping out at a school for two solid weeks.
the children have had moments of greatest and absolute chaos.
friday after taking my class to their special
i heard footsteps behind me.
turning around i looked to find two of my
mischievous 5th graders following me.
"we got detention." they said to me.
"with who?" i asked crossing my arms.
"with mr. c." they answered.
i watched as mr. c passed us
without even giving us a second glance.
"gentlemen, you don't have detention."
"we do." they insisted.
i shook my head
and turning starting walking back to the classroom.
and turning starting walking back to the classroom.
"so why do you have detention?" i asked
listening to their footsteps behind me.
listening to their footsteps behind me.
"we don't know we just have it."
walking down the hallway i paused at my door.
"gentlemen, you don't have detention." i said looking into their dark brown eyes.
"we do!" they answered with great animation.
"with who?" i asked again.
"with you." they smiled.
i entered the classroom.
"alright then gentlemen." if you have detention,
then you must clean up your writing!"
then you must clean up your writing!"
and they did,
and when they were finished they looked at me
and holding out their little palms they grinned.
it was all i could do not to laugh
as i handed them each a chocolate kiss!
it has been a most adventurous two weeks with those darlings.

Lucky gentlemen to have detention with you!

Good morning my friend,
ReplyDeleteI have been away from the computer all day yesterday and I hope you get my comment.
I can recall many moments like this when I KNEW that the behavior was either a cry for attention, a REAL issue, or just life happening before me. In all circumstances, I was proud to be the one adult in that one moment in a child's life when they needed to know someone cared.
Bravo.
Anita
And in response to your comment, I think that this part of the job (wrapping our spirits around them) is my absolute favorite part of the job. Oh is it ever. Because then you see life UNFOLDING before you as you never expected.
ReplyDeleteOFF WE GO TOMORROW MY FRIEND! Make it a good one. Anita
